Dams & Locks

Reinforced concrete structures in aquatic environments suffer deterioration due to freeze/thaw damage, cracking, and cavitation damage in spillways.  Repair must be done using materials and systems that can withstand these attacks and deliver long-term useful life for these structures.

Horizontal – Vehicular Traffic Coating & Toppings

Gemite offers highly durable, abrasion & impact resistant, polymer modified cement materials, ready for heavy vehicular traffic. Product range is suitable for thicknesses varying from 3 mm (1/8”) to 50 mm (2”), and even thicker.

All products can be applied over rough and damp surfaces and provide skid-proof and extremely tough surface resistant to snow ploughs and heavy traffic.

Product selection is based on the depth of surface deterioration.

Surface Preparation

Shotblast, sandblast or scarifying are used for surface preparation, to obtain a minimum CSP #3 per ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute) surface profile.

Clean the reprofiled surface using 34 MPa (5,000 psi) pressure water.

Corrosion Protection – Fibre-Prime

Clean reinforcing steel using mechanical abrasion – “white metal” surface is NOT required.

Polymerised cementitious rustproofing, with migrating corrosion protection technology, is applied to any exposed reinforcing steel (rebar) and protects all surfaces of partially “buried” steel.

Cem-Kote Barrier Cote 100 – 3-6 mm (1/8”-1/4”)

Super durable, abrasion & impact resistant, polymerized cementitious heavy-duty traffic coating suitable for restoration and protection of airport traffic surfaces.  It is spray or brush applied in 2-coats – can be opened to traffic after 24-hours of air-drying.

Gem-Crete HF ST –6-12 mm (1/4”-1/2”)

Thicker traffic bearing overlay that has an exceptional fracture toughness and crack resistance, combined with superior abrasion resistance.  Highly flowable – easily applied by screeding. Tining finish provides superior traction. Under normal conditions it can be open to traffic after 48 hours of air-drying.

Gem-Crete HDO –12-60 mm (1/2”-2”)

Heavy-Duty, highly fibre-reinforced traffic bearing bonded overlay is super tough and delivers excellent impact and abrasion resistance – over 25-years successful track record under high-traffic loads on highway bridge decks. Gem-Crete HDO can be extended with coarse aggregate for thicker applications.

Cem-Kote Barrier Coat 100 must be used as a bonding agent fin application of Gem-Crete HDO.

Advantages of Thin Traffic Bearing Bonded Toppings

  • Thin Application – less costly than partial slab replacement
  • Systems available for any Thicknesses
  • Easy & Fast Application – with Standard equipment & tools
  • High Abrasion & Impact resistance
  • UV stability
  • Easy maintenance

Adi-Con CSF (R) Modified Concrete – > 50 mm (2”)

Key advantages

  • Thin Application – less costly than partial slab replacement
  • Low weight – no structural modification required
  • Improves strength and abrasion & impact resistance of concrete
  • Reduces rebar corrosion
  • Easy and fast application
  • Improves freeze-thaw durability

Vertical – Restoration & Waterproofing

Surface Preparation

Depending on degree of deterioration and contamination, clean the surface using 34 MPa (5,000 psi) pressure water, or sandblast, to obtain minimum CSP #3 per ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute).

Rebar Rustproofing – Fibre-Prime

Clean reinforcing steel using mechanical abrasion – “white metal” surface is NOT required.

Polymerised cementitious rustproofing, with migrating corrosion protection technology, is applied to any exposed reinforcing steel (rebar) and protects all surfaces of partially “buried” steel.

Waterproofing – Cem-Kote Flex ST

apply two coats of Cem-Kote Flex ST.

Freeze/thaw resistance – Gem-Gard SL

To improve freeze-thaw resistance of dam concrete surfaces, clean the concrete surface using 35 MPa (5,000 psi) pressure water, and apply molecular silane sealer Gem-Gard SL.  The application needs to be repeated every 5-7 years, depending of project exposure and conditions.

If the surface is deteriorated and needs reprofiling or levelling, use on of the following, depending on depth of deterioration.

Levelling & Reprofiling up to 12 mm (1/2”) – Gem-Plast TC

Spray applied and troweled, or hand applied.  Floor slabs may require a higher thickness.

Reprofiling over 12 mm (1/2”) – Fibre-Patch OV

For larger volumes consider using Spray-Con WS ST – wet shotcrete process applied mortar.

Key advantages

  • Shrinkage compensated – low drying shrinkage
  • Resistance to cracking
  • Excellent adhesion
  • Excellent workability

Spillways – Restoration

Surface Preparation

Clean the concrete surface sandblasting to obtain CSP #3 profile as per ICRI (International Concrete Repair Institute).

Rebar Rustproofing – Fibre-Prime

Clean reinforcing steel using mechanical abrasion – “white metal” surface is NOT required.

Polymerised cementitious rustproofing, with migrating corrosion technology, is applied to any exposed reinforcing steel (rebar) and protects all surfaces of partially “buried” steel.

Gem-Crete HDO – for thicknesses 12-50 mm (1/2”-2”)

Heavy-Duty, highly fibre-reinforced bonded overlay has an exceptional fracture toughness and crack resistance, combined with superior abrasion resistance – with over 25-years successful track record.

Adi-Con CSF (R) Modified Concrete – > 50 mm (2”)

Key advantages

  • Thin Application – less costly than partial slab replacement
  • Low weight – no structural modification required
  • Improves strength and abrasion & impact resistance of concrete
  • Reduces rebar corrosion
  • Easy and fast application
  • Improves freeze-thaw durability
