Bridges
Substructure – Concrete Repair
Concrete bridge structures suffer from corrosion of the reinforcing steel (rebar) due to low cover, carbonation of concrete and presence of chlorides from de-icing salts. Concrete maybe deteriorated (eroded) to varying depths and requires surface repair.
The condition of the surface is sometimes only found after a suitable surface preparation is carried out, using high-pressure water 35 MPa (5,000 psi), or sandblast – depending on concrete quality and/or contamination.
Corrosion Protection – Fibre-Prime
Clean reinforcing steel using mechanical abrasion – “white metal” surface is NOT required.
Polymerised cementitious rustproofing, with migrating corrosion technology, is applied to any exposed reinforcing steel (rebar) and protects all surfaces of partially “buried” steel.
Levelling & Reprofiling up to 12 mm (1/2”) – Gem-Plast TC
Spray applied and troweled, or hand applied. Floor slabs may require a higher thickness.
Levelling & Reprofiling over 12 mm (1/2”) – Fibre-Patch OV
For larger volumes consider using Spray-Con WS ST – wet shotcrete process applied mortar.
Advantages of Gemite’s concrete repair products:
- Low drying shrinkage
- Resistance to cracking
- Excellent adhesion
- Exceptional workability
Substructure – Penetrating Sealers
Sealers penetrate deeply into substrate and provide excellent protection against harsh exposure conditions, by forming a chemical barrier that shields against moisture penetration and de-icing chemicals. Sealers are breathable, allowing moisture vapor to escape and provide long-term protection – re-apply in 5-7 years.
Low pressure-wash 17.5 MPa (2,500 psi) is used for surface preparation, before sealer application.
Gem-Gard SL VOC
Clear, solvent borne VOC compliant molecular size silane sealer
Gem-Gard SX WB
Clear, waterborne molecular size siloxane penetrating sealer
Rain-Shield MS 100
Clear, Nano-particle, waterborne, deeply penetrating sealer – delivering superior protection.
Rain-Shield Stain OP WB
Color acrylic waterborne stain provides color uniformity and protection to significantly extend life of structures.
Advantages of Gemite’s sealers:
- High breathability
- Superior long-term durability – in excess of 30 years
- Easy application
- Zero or low VOC
Substructure – Crack-Bridging Highly Flexible Coating
Tuff-Flex CA
Highly flexible, chemically crosslinked, waterborne, acrylic coating that provides an excellent bridging of substrate cracks.
Advantages of Tuff-Flex CA:
- Permanently seals moving cracks
- Superior long-term durability – over 30 years
- Highly breathable
- Excellent resistance to carbonation (CO2)
- Exceptionally UV light resistant
- Easy application
Corrosion Inhibitor – In-Depth Protection
Gem-Gard MCI
Migrating corrosion inhibitor provides superior anticorrosion protection of rusted reinforcing steel (rebar), especially in concrete with high content of de-icing salts – surface applied.
Deck (Traffic Surface) – Penetrating Sealers
Gem-Seal WA ST
Clear, Nano-particle, waterborne, deeply penetrating sealer – delivering superior protection.
Advantages of Gemite’s sealers:
- High breathability
- Superior long-term durability – in excess of 30 years
- Easy application
- Zero or low VOC
Deck – Traffic Coating / Topping
Shot-blast or scarifying is used for surface preparation of before application of traffic coatings / toppings.
Cem-Kote Barrier Cote 100 – 3-6 mm (1/8”-1/4”)
Extremely durable, abrasion & impact resistant, polymerised cementitious coating suitable for heavy-traffic is applied in two coats from 3 mm (1/8 in) to 6 mm (1/4 in).
Gem-Crete HF ST – 6-12 mm (1/4”-1/2”)
Heavy-Duty waterproofing membrane, and skid resistant high-traffic surface – can be applied to rough and damp surfaces.
Gem-Crete HDO – 12-55 mm (1/2”-2”)
Heavy-Duty, Waterproof Traffic Topping provides superior resistance to the extreme traffic loads (heavy trucks and tanks).
Cem-Kote Barrier Cote 100 is used as bonding agent (wet-to-wet).
Adi-Con CSF (R) – toppings over 60 mm (2”)
Microsilica based admixture that doubles compressive strength of concrete from 5,000 psi to 10,000 psi (from 35 to 70 MPa), improves the chemical resistance of concrete and greatly improves concrete resistance to chloride penetration.
Advantages of Gemite’s Traffic Re-Surfacing materials:
- Thin section application
- Low weight – no bridge re-classification is required
- Easy and fast application
- High abrasion and impact resistance
