Restoration & Waterproofing of Severely Deteriorated Concrete Coal Bunkers, Halmeu, Romania

Project: Restoration & Waterproofing of Severely Deteriorated Concrete Coal Bunkers, Halmeu, Romania
Designer: Restoration of Reinforced Concrete Coal Bunkers, Halmeu, Romania
Owner: AFER (Romanian Railway Authority)
Contractor:
Products: Gem-Crete HDO, Spray-Con WS ST, Adi-Con CSF(R), Fibre-Prime
Objective:

Restoration of badly corroded, spalled and delaminated concrete of reinforced concrete bunkers used for storage and transfer of coal for the steam locomotives of the Romanian State Railways.

Long term protection against abrasion and waterproofing were inherent parts of this complex process.

After a thorough removal of all delaminations, the concrete was aggressively sandblasted to obtain a clean surface, ready for repairs.

Fibre-Prime was used to protect all exposed and corroded reinforcing steel (rebar).

Spray-Con WS ST (wet shotcrete) and Adi-Con CSF(R) micro-silica enhanced concrete were used for large volumes of reprofiling required. Most has been hand-applied, due to the complexity of bunker surfaces.

All interior bunker surfaces were waterproofed and protected using Gem-Crete HDO, heavy-duty, highly impact and abrasion resistant protective thin bonded topping, with superior freeze/thaw durability, as required in this project.

Advantages of Gem-Crete HDO

  • High strength
  • Superior bond to wet and dry concrete
  • Breathability
  • Thixotropy that allows vertical or horizontal applications
  • Non-flammable & Non-toxic.
